The Brazilian Federation of YMCAs participated, day 24/03/2007 at Praça da Sé, in São Paulo, a public act in defense of life and against the bill that provides legalization of abortion up to the 9th. month of pregnancy.
The event brought together some 10,000 people and was attended by many representative of organized civil society. Speeches, as the president of the Brazilian Federation of YMCAs, and musical performances, among them those of Father Marcelo Rossi, made the day memorable.
The nonpartisan, nonsectarian movement was born of a parliamentary initiative against the bill. Soon, state committees were created and the State of São Paulo has the leadership of Ms. Marilia de Castro, director of ACM São Paulo and Advocate of REBRAF - Brazilian Network of Charity and Philanthropic Entities.
The press event was weight in giving national prominence to the cause. Thus, the movement hopes to sensitize society on the issue and motivate lawmakers to discuss in more depth the question of abortion in the country.
